Our Favorite Books- 4-5 Months
Harris didn’t start liking books until recently. The only one he would pay any attention to was a crinkle paper book called My First Book of 1, 2, 3. He would “read”it while sitting on the high chair or at a restaurant in our lap. It was a go to for him to keep him distracted and calm. But he outgrew that pretty quickly, and has since moved on to touch and feel books, and this mama is so happy about it!
Now, we are reading a few touch and feel books. I had a lot of these gifted to Harris from the baby shower, but once I saw what he was into, I bought a couple that seemed to be what he liked. He likes books that have vibrant colors and each page has something new to feel. He does not like a lot of words on the page, and can’t follow a story. I know they say to read books to your baby from early on, but Harris just isn’t docile enough right now to sit on my lap while I read him a story. These books are great for the “distracted” baby :-) We read when he is not quite tired for the nap yet, or if he is upset before the nap. I never put him in his crib upset, so if he is crying, we will sit on the rocker and read a book or two until he calms down.
1. Amazing Baby Feel and Learn Soft Teether Book: This book is another crinkle paper book, and each page has a different animal with the word printed as well as what the animal says printed. Each animal also has a different feel to it, like smooth or scaly. Attached to the book is a teether, perfect for him to teeth on while we flip through the book.
2. On the Night You Were Born: We have this classic in a board book. Admittedly, I love this one probably more than Harris. Harris does enjoy staring at the different illustrations, but he gets bored of it quickly. I cry, cry, cry every time! haha So I keep this one on the table for when I’m feeling lovey and want to cuddle him. It is so sweet and simple.
3. Never Touch a Dragon: Probably Harris’s favorite book. This book has silicone shapes on each page for your baby to reach out and touch. The colors are super bright, and the words are a cute, sing song melody. It is a really silly premise, and I know Harris will love it even more when he can understand it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone with a baby. There are others as well, including Don’t Ever Touch a Shark and Don’t Every Touch a Monster. We will be ordering those too!
4. See, Touch, Feel: A First Sensory Book: This is a bit on the pricey side ($11). We received this as a gift, though and Harris loves it. A close contender for his favorite. If you are registering for a baby shower, consider putting this one on there. Or if you find it on sale, snag it! It is larger than most books and has so much going on on each page. Each page has a different tactile experience in bright colors. There is paint on one page, snails, drums, etc. There are very few words. It is mostly a sensory experience, which is perfect for Harris, especially when he is upset. He mostly bangs on it and stares open mouth at each page, so it is certainly effective!
5. Will You Be My Sunshine: This book is just so precious. It is a short story, and like On the Night You Were Born, it is probably more for me right now than Harris. But the illustrations are beautiful and Harris loves seeing them. The story is just adorable about a mother mouse and her baby mouse and how she will always be there for him. Its a happy, sweet book that I enjoy reading to Harris, and Harris seems to enjoy looking at.
6. Pat the Bunny Deluxe Edition: This was a gift and, again, on the pricier side, but it is a classic and Harris does enjoy it. When you read it, you feel like you’re in the 50s haha, but each page does have something cute on it for your child to explore, like a box of buttons rattling and a soft bunny to touch. It is very simple, and less bright than the other books, so if your child is over tired or over stimulated, it is a nice segue to nap time or bedtime.
So that’s what we are currently reading! What are you and your little one reading?
